COVID-19

To be transparent while maintaining student and staff confidentiality, we will be providing weekly updates on the number of students and staff who tested positive or are in quarantine for COVID-19.

Students and staff are placed in quarantine due to a positive COVID-19 test, experiencing symptoms, or have been in close contact with someone else who tested positive. Students and staff in quarantine are under the direction of the Lawrence or Barry county health departments.

These numbers are monitored daily by the school officials and updated on the school web page each Friday or when we are notified of a new case.

Students and staff are placed in quarantine due to a positive COVID-19 test, experiencing symptoms, or have been in close contact with someone else who tested positive. Students and staff in quarantine are under the direction of the Lawrence or Barry county health departments.

Once a student or employee is excluded from the school environment, they may return if they satisfy the CDC or local health departments' recommendations. Students may also return if they are approved in writing by the student's health care provider.

If a student is excluded from school due to COVID-19 symptoms or has had a positive COVID-19 test, their siblings or other students living in the same household will be questioned. If they exhibit symptoms, they will also be excluded from school. If they do not exhibit symptoms, they may still be excluded from school and asked to self-quarantine.

If you have a COVID test for any reason (even a scheduled procedure), your student will need to stay home until after the results are received.

Volunteers for this school year will need to be cleared with the Superintendent before a background check is processed. Background check paperwork will be issued from the Central Office when a volunteer is approved to be in the district.

We appreciate your support and acknowledge the COVID-19 pandemic has not been easy for you. Help us stay open by completing the Daily Health Screening each day before sending your student(s) to school.

Health Protocols and Information

Our number one priority is the safety of our students and staff. Masks are required for all staff and students in grades 3-12. It is highly encouraged for students in grades PK-2 to wear a mask.

Click on the links below to review our Health Office Procedures and to download the At Home Screening Tool. Students must be screened daily before sending them to school. If they present any of the symptoms mentioned in the At Home Screening Tool, please keep your student(s) home and call your child's respective school office to report their absence.

Daily Needed Supplies

Items students need to bring to school daily:

  • Backpack

  • Clean Water Bottle: Our water fountains are off, but our water filler stations are working. Please have your student bring a refillable water bottle. They need to take it home and clean it DAILY!

  • Clean Mask: Grades 3rd and up are required to wear a mask. Students will have mask breaks throughout the day. For the safety of students and staff, students must bring a clean mask daily.

Device Insurance Fee/Deposit

Grades K-4: If families choose virtual instruction, an insurance deposit must be paid before the device leaves our campus. If students return to on-campus learning or the school year ends, and the school-issued device is not damaged, the deposit will be returned. However, if the device is damaged, the deposit will be used to pay the insurance fee and replace or fix the damaged device.

Grades 5-12: If families choose to take a device home, an insurance fee must be paid before the device leaves our campus. The cost of insurance for the school device has been lowered.

The online convenience fee on our online payment portal has been waived until September 4, 2020.

The table below gives you an overview of our new insurance fees.

Transportation

Parents are encouraged to drop off/pick up students to decrease the number of students on the bus.

All students will be required to wear a mask. The bus driver will have extra masks on the bus for students that do not have a mask. Students will have assigned seats and buses will be disinfected after each route. If students are waiting at the bust stop, it is encouraged for students to remain in their family groups and practice social distancing. If social distancing is not an option, please wear a mask.

Our bus routes have changed this school year. We have added four additional busses to help reduce the number of students on each bus. We will have eight buses that will pick up and drop off students in grades PK-6 and eleven buses that will pick up and drop off grades 7-12.

Reminder: All students in grades PK-2 riding the bus must have someone meet them at the bus stop to get off the bus. Students that do not have someone meeting them at the bus stop will be taken back to MES and join the Cub House until a parent or guardian picks them up.

If you are unsure of your child’s bus stop, please call Apple Bus at 417-354-0941 or your child’s school office.
