MHS students in Ms. Griffin and Mrs. Leeper's classes have learned about different cultures and what makes each person unique. Students learned about art, architecture, foods, clothes, traditions, daily life, celebrations, and much more. Students interviewed people and furthered their knowledge in their own culture too. We invite the community to stop by MHS tomorrow, October 7th, to learn about different cultures from 6-7 pm. The Culture Fair is a celebration of the different cultures in Monett.

Fourth grade students are learning about measurement. Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Allen's class spent time measuring volume using liters and milliliters. The Bridges program provides many opportunities for students to engage in hands-on learning!

Mrs. Huntress 6th-grade students participated in the first science lab of the school year. Students compared the heating and cooling rates of the soil and water.

FEATURE FRIDAY - Nicole Coffey - Monett Intermediate School Counselor Mrs. Coffey enjoys camping, reading, and traveling. Her 14th wedding anniversary is coming up in January 2022. She has two daughters who attend Monett. She has been in education for 6 years and 2 of those years in Monett. Show your appreciation in the comments!

We are excited to share we have installed new safety features at the Burl Fowler Stadium. The gates will start on a time schedule, beginning Monday, September 27, 2021. The gates will automatically open at 5:00 am and close at 11:00 pm. If locked inside, the Monett Police Department will need to be called to bypass the lock and open the gates. To avoid being locked in, please leave before 11:00 pm. Cameras have also been installed to help keep everyone safe. Thank you for helping us keep the Burl Fowler Stadium clean and safe for all to use.

Students in Mrs. Bumgarner's 8th grade class compete in dictionary races to practice their Communication Arts skills. Students move from one side of the gym to the other by bunny hopping, running, skipping, and more. Once they reach their destination, the goal is to look up vocabulary words before their opponents to earn their team a point and move ahead in the game.

Congratulations to the 2021 Homecoming Court! Homecoming is on Friday, September 24! We are having a parade this year. The Homecoming parade will take place on Broadway at 4:00 pm. Students in Ms. Barker's class are working on their photography skills. They got the iPads out and went outside to explore framing the subject. Some students got creative and took an actual frame with them. The object was to get close to the foreground to create framing in their photographs.

Congratulations to Kenneth Carney on his retirement. Ken has been in education for 17 years. He taught in Jasper and Golden City before coming to Monett. He plans on working in the garden and spending time in his workshop. Ken and his wife Katrina are looking forward to taking a trip to the west in the fall. They are also looking forward to spending time with family. Join me in congratulating Ken Carney on his retirement!

Trooper Samuel Carpenter and Corporal Antonio Sandoval visited our students during summer school. They spoke about the different jobs in the highway patrol, including the Water Division, SWAT, Aircraft Division, and Motorcycle Division. Congratulations to Laurie Woolfolk on her retirement! Laurie has been in education for 31 years. She has been part of our Monett family for eight years at SRTC, serving as the student career counselor. Laurie plans on doing anything she wants and not having to worry about a schedule to follow. She also looks forward to spending more time with her family and five grandchildren. Join me in congratulating Laurie on her retirement!

This summer, our incoming 7th and 8th graders will be hosting the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair and 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair during the last two days of the month. In preparation for this, students have been divided into small groups and given a country that was represented during these exhibitions. It is their job to research the culture, history, impact on the time period, and the exhibit at the Fair in an effort to re-create it for our own Fair. Students have been designing and building their displays to show off their cultural knowledge from the turn of the century.

Staff Sergeant Kevin McCorkedale and Private Felicity Burnett presented to Mr. Verslues' summer school class. They are both in the Marines and came to Monett to talk to students about the Marines. Students learned about the capabilities of the Marines: ground logistics, aviation logistics, ground combat element, and air combat element. Students also learned about their uniforms and the day-to-day life of a Marine during Bootcamp. Private Burnett is the first member of her family to join the Marines. She is also one of the first females to train at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. Thank you, Staff Sergeant McCorkendale and Private Burnett, for presenting to our summer school students. Fun fact: Mr. Verslues is a Marine! 👏 😊
