Phonological Awareness:

  • Clap syllables in words.
    • ta - ble
    • Mo - nett
    • can - dy
  • Make up rhyming words:
    • fan, zan, pan
    • hot, tot, cot
  • Change the sounds in words.
    • “Say cat. Now change /k/ to /s/.“
      • cat → sat
  • Read nursery rhymes.

 

 

Phonics:

  • Use this Interactive Alphabet Arc for more letter Identification practice.
  • Practice letter names and sounds.
  • Spot the vowels in written words. (a, e, i, o, and u)
  • Go on a vowel hunt in a book. 
  • Use the Starfall for at home review and practice.
  • Practice word lists that are sent home (orally and written).

 

 

Fluency:

  • Practice reading in silly voices.
  • Echo reading (you read, they read)
  • Read books together.
  • Read books sent home by teachers.

 

 

Vocabulary:

  • Create a vocabulary list when reading a book.
  • Describe new words, using pictures or objects.
  • Look up unknown words as you read.

 

 

Comprehension:

Ask questions while reading...

  • What do you think will happen in this story?
  • Who are the characters and what are they doing?
  • What happened at the beginning, middle, end?
  • Where is the story taking place?
  • What caused ____ to happen?
  • What is the problem in this story? How did they solve the problem?
