Identifying and Qualifying

When enrolling a student in school, parents or guardians are required to answer questions related to the languages spoken at home. If a language other than English is identified on the enrollment forms, either as spoken or understood by the student, the school will conduct an English language screening. This screening is used to determine whether the student may benefit from additional English language support.

Both state and federal laws require schools to assess a student’s English proficiency. The results help determine if your child is eligible for English language support services.

If a student qualifies for services, they will be identified as an English Language Learner (ELL) and may receive personalized support to help them succeed in an English-speaking classroom environment. Monett Schools utilizes a variety of instructional models to provide content-based, integrated language instruction tailored to the needs of ELL students.

Parents have the right to decline specifically funded English language support services or supplemental services. However, students who are identified as English Language Learners are still required to participate in the annual English language proficiency assessment.
