At Monett Middle School, inclusion and hands-on learning come together through the work of Ms. Shelby Bennett. Shelby supports a variety of Special Education and daily living classes, helping students build practical skills that extend beyond the classroom. Through MMS Express, a student-run coffee and snack shop, she creates real-world learning experiences that strengthen math, problem-solving, and communication skills. Students manage inventory, handle transactions, and practice teamwork and responsibility.
Shelby’s commitment to inclusion goes even further through her leadership in Special Olympics, now known as Inclusion Revolution. Inspired by her own family’s involvement in Special Olympics, including her brother who participated from elementary through high school, Shelby has made it her mission to expand opportunities for Monett students.
This year, she is taking the next step by becoming certified to lead Monett’s first Special Olympics bowling team, which will compete in its first event this November. The group currently includes about a dozen students, and there are hopes of expanding into other sports in the future.
Beyond competition, Shelby continues to teach valuable social skills. Students are now practicing community interactions by delivering snacks through a mobile cart service, helping them build confidence and manage anxiety in a supportive environment.
The Board of Education extends a heartfelt thank you to Shelby for her initiative, compassion, and dedication to growing this program. Because of her efforts, Monett students are gaining new ways to connect, learn, and shine both in and out of the classroom.
