Gifted Educaion

We consider each parent or teacher request according to state requirements and the following district processes.  We have a team of staff members who monitor all students' assessment scores in K-8th grades throughout the school year with a selection period each semester.

Missouri criteria states that students must demonstrate excellent mastery of skills or potential on three or more of the following gifted referral universal screening items:

  • District Assessments

  • Achievement Test Scores (MAP, STAR)

  • Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAt)

  • Teacher Observation/ Gifted Rating Scale (GES)

Once these preliminary components have been met, then the student will move on to the next stage of eligibility including an IQ assessment.  Data from the four areas below will be considered to place a child in gifted services.

  1. General Mental Ability: Full-scale or index scores on an individual intelligence test at or above the 95th percentile (125 standard score).

  2. Academic Ability: If achievement test scores are used for formal evaluation and placement, they must be derived from a norm-referenced test and the cut-off score must be set at the 95th percentile or higher.  In addition, a pattern of scores at/above the 95th percentile must be present over more than one session.

  3. Creativity, Reasoning, and Problem-solving Ability: Results of valid tests or other assessments indicating outstanding ability in one of the following areas are required: Creative and productive thinking, Advanced insight, Outstanding imagination, Innovative or creative reasoning ability, Advanced perception of cause and effect relationships, Problem solving, Abstract concepts.

  4. Documented evidence of exceptional performance in a general academic area, a fine arts area, or another area related to the design of the gifted program.

Parents will be notified if your student is selected to move on in the process to provide consent prior to any standardized assessments being administered.
